OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill., and ZURICH, Switzerland, 25 02 2009 – VASCO Data Security International, Inc. (Nasdaq: VDSI) (www.vasco.com), a leading software security company specializing in authentication products, announces today that Caja de Extemadura (www.cajaextremadura.es) uses VASCO’s DIGIPASS® 810 to secure its online banking solution Servicash. Caja de Extremadura is the first bank in Spain to distribute EMV CAP certified card readers to its retail customers.

Caja de Extremadura is considered as one of the most solid and profitable savings banks in Spain. Within the framework of the Independent Community of Extremadura, its scope of action, the bank manages around 25% of the business volume turning it into the unquestionable leader of the regional financial system.

As the internet is an important component of the bank’s multi channel strategy and in order to give their customers a secure e-banking experience, the bank deployed VASCO’s DIGIPASS 810 card readers. Functionalities of DIGIPASS 810 include among other EMV-CAP technology, making Caja de Extremadura a pioneer in Spain in using strong authentication that is EMV certified.

Thanks to DIGIPASS 810 Caja de Extremadura’s customers can access their online banking accounts from the comfort of their own home at any time. The bank offers customers a complete online banking experience as Servicash includes mail functionalities, a web agenda and a tool for organizing domestic accounts. To assist customers during an online purchase, Caja de Extremadura developed a virtual assistant, named “VINI”.

DIGIPASS 810 is also used by Caja de Extremadura’s employees to log on to the company’s corporate VPN; allowing them to securely access the bank’s network anywhere at any given time without needing to install additional hard- or software on end-users’ computers.

“The explosive growth of online banking services and consequently the rising number of fraudulent attacks required the implementation of a strong security mechanism”, says Virgilio Daza, Head of Organization at Caja de Extremadura.. By choosing VASCO’s DIGIPASS 810 card readers, we’ve added an extra layer of security in accessing our e-banking services and corporate network. Users not only need to have both the reader and their card, they also need to insert a PIN. Furthermore, as every financial transaction needs to be signed by the customer using strong dynamic passwords, we’ve built in another security check; reducing the risk that our customers fall prey to internet fraudsters.”

VASCO’s President and COO Jan Valcke says: “We praise Caja de Extramadura’s pioneering vision in providing a comprehensive online banking experience to its customers. As the first bank in Spain to use EMV certified card readers with a challenge response authentication method, they have added an extra security layer to their e-banking solution; giving their customers peace of mind when conducting online transactions. DIGIPASS is a very versatile solution as one authentication solution can be implemented into different applications. Caja de Extremadura demonstrated this by using DIGIPASS to secure access to its corporate VPN, a perfect example of VASCO’s Full Option, All-Terrain strategy.”
